Instagram already supports nonprofit organizations through the donation sticker in Stories and donate button on Instagram Business Accounts. Today, the service unveiled a new way to help raise funds for approved nonprofits through live streams.
The Facebook-owned photo and video sharing platform has introduced a new feature that allows broadcasters to host a live fundraiser for a nonprofit of their own choosing. Funds collected from their viewers will all go to their chosen charitable group, meaning Instagram won’t take a cut from the proceeds. Broadcasters can also keep track of donations they raise in real-time and followers who will donate will receive the “I donated” sticker for a limited period. The sticker was created by Brazilian community illustrator Leo Natsume.
To start a live fundraiser, hosts can simply open the Instagram camera from the top left of the Feed or by swiping right in Feed and tapping on Live. Then they must select the fundraiser option and elect a nonprofit for which they’d like to receive the donations. This is part of Instagram’s fundraising efforts after it rolled out its donation sticker to more counties in March of this year. Also, its parent company, Facebook, is helping raise money for different causes by adding the donate button on live videos across its platforms where fundraising efforts are available.
