The latest entry in the acclaimed Yakuza series by Sega is heading to more platforms. The Japanese RPG already released in Japan earlier this year on PlayStation 4, and the upcoming western release was to be a Sony console exclusive until today’s announcement during the Inside Xbox presentation, where PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X releases were confirmed. Catch the newly released cinematic trailer above.
As evident by the trailer, there is a new protagonist in town, with Kazuma Kiryu being replaced by Ichiban Kasuga for this soft reboot. Like a Dragon takes place in the modern-day city of Yokohama. Here’s a short description of the new face in town and the setting taken from the game’s store page:
Ichiban Kasuga, a low-ranking grunt of a low-ranking yakuza family in Tokyo, faces an 18-year prison sentence after taking the fall for a crime he didn’t commit. Never losing faith, he loyally serves his time and returns to society to discover that no one was waiting for him on the outside, and his clan has been destroyed by the man he respected most.
Confused and alone, he embarks on a mission to discover the truth behind his family’s betrayal and take his life back, becoming an unlikely hero for the city’s outcasts on his journey.
Moreover, unlike previous games’ brawler fighting system, this entry will be using turn-based mechanics for its battles. The popular minigames, including favorites like karaoke and arcades, as well as over 50 sub-stories will be present in the game for players to experience.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon will now be releasing on Steam, Windows 10, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 later this year. The Xbox Series X version will be landing a little later it seems, but the game will be utilizing Smart Delivery, giving Xbox One owners of the title a free upgrade to Xbox Series X version at launch with full cross-save compatibility.
