Make the Chess board out of a full size PCB panel with RFID sensors in each square and put RFID chips in each piece. Code the game logic to track the state of the game and detect moves and determine if they are legal or not. Can also add magnets in the pieces and coils on the board so the pieces can be moved automatically, such as when setting up a new game. Can also implement a “Rage quit mode” where it flings all the pieces off the board.
I joke… but this could have been a fun computer science project back in the day.
