Because I spent my earlier adult life in Washington DC working in government, the demographics of the place would impel me to have even more colorblind attitudes. And so that’s what I became, and I like myself that way.
Yet I had assumed, by the mid-1980s and through the ’90s, that racism had “evaporated”. Was I crazy? That murder and lynching in Jasper, Texas happened during the 1990s.
We don’t ask that racists suffer with accountability for their racism. What we do demand is that hate crimes are punished according to the Law.
But a politician might be accountable for his decisions to say racist things. If Trump isn’t held to book for his racism, then the fault belongs to the myriad racists who always supported him, and the indifferent who just didn’t go to the polls. Personally , I just can’t believe they constitute anything close to a majority in our country. But either way, I wish they would all scurry under a rock somewhere, and then persist to keep in the shadows.
