RIP Mr. Jackson. I attended one of his campaign speeches when he was running for president in 1988. I used to think he was overly opportunistic in grabbing microphones but, reflecting on the past decades, I can see why he did that. Keeping a black presence in national politics has proven extremely difficult and Mr. Jackson was able to step up to the role when so many others were ignored.
